Summary It is widely accepted that seed storage proteins accumulate only in cells which have entered the cell expansion phase and do not continue to divide. Here we present data indicating that the accumulation of storage globulins in tobacco begins already during early embryogenesis in a period of sustained mitotic activity. Western blot analysis revealed that polypeptides of the legumin-like 12S globulins (Mr 60000, 40000, 20000) appear at mid/late globular stage, whereas the vicilin-like 7S globulin (Mr 50000) follows during the transition from heart to torpedo stage. The accumulation of legumin-like polypeptides begins first in the endosperm during the mid globular stage followed in the embryo-suspensor complex during the heart-shaped stage. The vicilin-related fraction appears first in the endosperm and three days later in the embryo. Examination of individual cells from squash preparations revealed that protein bodies are not confined to intermitotic cells, but are also present in cells undergoing mitosis. Protein bodies of dividing cells situated outside the mitotic apparatus are not metabolized during cytokinesis. The only cell type which loses its protein bodies completely prior to the first mitotic division is the primary hypophysis cell. Our finding that storage proteins can occur in dividing cells independent of their origin and developmental capacity indicates that the cell expansion hypothesis of storage protein accumulation has to be revised.  相似文献

The two-phase dispersal event in which dung beetles move seeds after endozoochory is often assumed to be advantageous for plant regeneration. Because seeds are expected to end up in favourable and safe germination sites, it is considered as an example of directed dispersal. However, literature so far is restricted to tropical rain forest ecosystems, while data for temperate regions are lacking. In this study, the effect of dung beetles on seedling establishment of endozoochorically dispersed seeds is evaluated for a temperate grassland ecosystem. We performed a field experiment in which cages excluded dung beetles from horse and cattle dung samples with mixed-in grass seeds. Seed germination from these samples was significantly higher than that from samples which were accessible to dung beetles. This indicates that the effect of dung beetles on short-term seedling establishment was negative, which contrasts with the patterns found for large-seeded species used in tropical studies. This is most likely attributed to the lack of roller species and the larger depth at which tunneling Geotrupes species bury seeds.  相似文献

High altitude wetlands on the Tibetan Plateau have been shrinking due to anthropogenic disturbances and global climate change. However, the few studies that have been conducted on wetlands are inconclusive about the effect of soil moisture on seed banks and potential of seed banks in wetlands with different levels of soil moisture for regeneration of dried wetlands. We investigated seed banks and plant communities along a soil moisture gradient. A structural equation model was used to analyze the direct and indirect effects of soil moisture on seed banks, as well as the relationship between plant communities and seed banks. Although soil moisture had no direct effects on seed bank richness and density and indirect effects on seed banks through plant community, it had indirect effects on the seed bank through soil pH. Soil moisture also did not have direct effects on plant community richness, but it had indirect effects through soil pH. Plant community composition changed with soil moisture, but aboveground plant abundance and seed banks composition did not change. Low similarity exists between plant community and seed banks for all wetlands, and similarity decreased along the moisture gradient. The key factor determining plant community diversity was soil pH, while seed bank diversity was mainly affected by soil pH and plant community diversity with wetland drying. Although potential for regenerating the plant community from the seed bank decreased with an increase in soil moisture, drained wetlands still have enough residual seeds for successful restoration of species-rich alpine meadows.  相似文献

Abstract. Morphological (size and shape) and functional (growth, reproduction and phenology) attributes are used to characterize 42 annual species of Mediterranean grasslands according to their strategy. Principal component analysis of the matrix of 42 species x 9 attributes shows that the main trend of variation is related to plant size. Larger species have larger seeds, lower relative growth rates and lower reproductive output. The second and third trends of variation are related to plant shape. Ordination of species shows differences in shape between taxa and growth forms (grasses, legumes, forbs). The relative abundance of species with different attributes vary with the level of stress (water and nutrient availability) and disturbance (grazing and ploughing). Size is related to stress, with larger plants dominating in productive habitats and smaller ones in the most unproductive. Disturbance is related to shape and phenology, since grazing favours species with low canopies and ploughing favours species with shorter life cycles, that are usually small in size. Relations between plant attributes and habitat characteristics are examined within the more general framework of plant strategy theory.  相似文献

Although population density is believed to be an important factor influencing evolutionary processes, surprisingly few studies have documented the existence or nature of density-dependent selection. We quantified the effects of density on directional selection on seed mass (the mass of a sown seed) and emergence time in the greenhouse and field for the annual plant Plantago wrightiana. In the greenhouse, we quantified selection on seed mass and emergence time at each of five planting densities (1 m–2 to 10,000 m–2) using the relationship between final plant mass and each trait at each density. We observed no significant selection on either seed mass or emergence time when plants were grown alone. At all higher densities, there was significant selection favoring early emergence and large seed mass, but there were no significant differences among the selection gradients determined at densities greater than individually grown plants. In the field, we detected no relationship between the magnitude of selection for early emergence and density. Our results suggest that selection on seed mass and time of emergence is density dependent, but the relationship between density and the magnitude of directional selection on these traits is not continuously increasing. Over broad ranges of density in the greenhouse and in the field, there was no detectable relationship between density and the magnitude of directional selection.  相似文献

Eastern boundary coastal upwelling ecosystems (EBUEs) are highly sensitive to climate variability, particularly to coastal wind change. Here, we test the response of the flesh yield of blue mussels cultured in the northern boundary of the Iberian–Canary current EBUE to climate-related variables. Significant relationships were found between the annual mean, seasonal build-up and phenology of the mussel flesh yield with meteorological variables such as continental runoff, intensity and direction of coastal winds, and solar radiation. Our analysis shows that better flesh yields occur during years characterised by dry winters, accompanied by early springs and followed by summers dominated by strong northerly winds that produce intense upwelling. Compared with other EBUEs, upwelling has weakened in the study area over the last fifty years, implying an overall decrease in mussel flesh yield. However, future climate scenarios suggest that coastal upwelling will intensify over the 21th century, particularly during the summer months, which would lead to a recovery of mussel flesh yield.  相似文献

The expression of the genes for two types of myrosinase (EC 3.2.3.1), designated MA and MB, during embryo and seedling development was investigated in Sinapis alba L. by in-situ and RNA slot-blot analyses. The expression of MA and MB genes followed similar temporal profiles during embryogenesis, but MB mRNA was present in considerably higher amounts than MA mRNA. In the embryo, both MA and MB genes are activated in cotyledons and axis. The MB genes are preferentially expressed in the cotyledons whereas MA genes are preferentially expressed in the axis. In the developing seedling, MA mRNA was not present in the organs investigated. By contrast, MB mRNA was found in appreciable amounts in hypocotyls, cotyledons and developing leaves. Floral meristems of Lolium and Festuca grasses give a 5- to 19-fold enhancement in yield of extracted DNA in comparison with leaves. Meristems also provide highly pure DNA samples. A critical investigation was conducted to find out the effect of neck blast disease on yield-contributing characters, and seed quality traits of aromatic rice in Bangladesh. Both healthy and neck-blast-infected panicles of three aromatic rice cultivars (high-yielding and local) were collected and investigated at Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur, Bangladesh. All of the tested varieties were highly susceptible to neck blast disease under natural conditions, though no leaf blast symptoms appear on leaves. Neck blast disease increased grain sterility percentages, reduced grain size, yield and quality traits of seeds. The degrees of yield and seed quality reduction depended on disease severity and variety's genetic make-up. Unfilled grains were the main source of seed-borne pathogen, especially for blast in the seed lot. Transmission of blast pathogen from neck (panicle base) to seed was very poor. These findings are important, especially concerning the seed certification programme in which seed lots are certified on the basis of field inspection. Finally, controlled experiments are needed to draw more critical conclusions.  相似文献
